Sound Research - A Mothers Son

While we were waiting for the new mac computers to arrive Me and Rianna spent some time doing some more research in lessons. We firstly watched some clips and analysed the sound, here is the first one:

'A Mother's Son' is a thriller TV programme, based on 2 episodes. At the opening of the first episode we firstly hear a lot of nature sounds. This helps us to imagine whereabouts the programme is set, the main noise we can hear at first is the sound of seagulls, this could suggest that the programme is set by the beach. Next we hear a non-diegetic sound of an instrument like a violin, music which you would hear at places like funerals, or mourning a death. You are also able to hear the sounds of walking on stones on pebbles, the walking is quite fast which makes you think you that this person is trying to get away from something. The pebbles also indicate the audience to some sort of beach. The non-diegetic music is slowly getting faster paced and more frantic and this creates tension and suspense to viewers, who are wondering what has happened. You then hear a faint noise from this girl, which is sort of like a cry, this is diegetic and is helping to create a sense that something is wrong with her. The only speech throughout the whole clip is the girl saying 'I'm Sorry' which adds to her cries of pain. This speech is diegetic. Throughout the whole opening all the sound is helping create the atmosphere of this programme and helping you figure out what sort of programme it is that you are watching. This relates to our opening sequence as we are also doing a thriller genre, and it helps me to see how much the sound is needed to create the right atmosphere for viewers.

Harry Potter Evaluation

What style or feel of music did you use for the credit sequence and why?

Me and Rianna felt that eerie music would suit the credits at the beginning as the visuals looked very creepy and mysterious, this would make it parallel. The opening helps the audience recognise the type of film they are about to watch so the credits have to help them figure out what sort of film it would be.

What style or feel music did you use for the playground sequence and why?

For the playground scene we used quite calming music, not to scary as the visuals showed children playing happily, the music was repetitive which was like the roundabout the children were playing on. As Harry's friends came over we faded out of the happier music and faded into a darker tune, which sounded more suspicious and creepy as we didn't know what they were going to say. The tune was suggesting something bad may happen next, and fit in well with the visuals.

What style or feel of music did you use for the sequence when the Dementors appeared and why? How do you feel the music and feel changed? To what extent do you feel you managed to convey the change in mood?

When the dementors appeared the music suddenly changed, we used a immediate sound effect. As the wind starts to blow the music changes to a loud piercing music, this shows something bad is around the corner. As Harry and Dudley start to run, the music changes to a fast paced tune. This is parallel to the visuals as they are running very fast. As they enter the tunnel the fast paced music fades out and we added in a very eerie creepy tune for under the tunnel. This creates a effect of the unknown, they didn't know what was under the tunnel and it is away from the outside so they are almost trapped inside. When the dementors appeared we used a loud wind sound as if they had entered very quickly. When they creep up on them we also added a sudden effect to make the audience jump.

How pleased are you with the final sequence and why?

I think that the overall soundtrack fitted the visuals well. The moods all fitted right and suited what was going on at each certain time. The sound was almost always parallel to the visuals and they created the right mood for each section of the clip.
